Etymology

آنِيّ is a relative adjective (nisba) built on آن, meaning 'moment' or 'instant.' The noun آن belongs to the root ء-و-ن, which also gives أوان, 'due time,' and the adverb الآن, 'now.' Adding the nisba suffix ـِيّ turns 'the instant' into 'of the instant,' that is, instantaneous or immediate. The word is Semitic in origin and has no Indo-European root.
