خَطَاto step, to walk
خُطًىsteps, footsteps

Etymology

The verb comes from the Semitic triliteral root خ-ط-و, which carries the sense of walking and taking a step. A single stride is a خَطْوَة. Form V (تَفَعَّلَ) turns the basic idea of stepping into stepping over or across something, and from there into figurative senses like overcoming an obstacle or exceeding a limit.
