Etymology

The word derives from the Semitic root q-d-m, which carries the sense of being in front or coming before. The Form V verbal noun pattern tafaʿʿul turns the verb taqaddama, to move forward, into an abstract noun for the act of moving ahead. The same root gives words for what is old, what precedes, and the front of things.
