Etymology
تِنِس is a direct loanword from English "tennis," adopted into Arabic in the twentieth century along with the sport itself. English "tennis" traces back to Anglo-French "tenetz," the imperative of "tenir," meaning "hold," reportedly called out by the server to the opponent. "Tenir" comes from Latin "tenere," to hold, which goes back to the PIE root for stretching or holding. Arabic did not adapt the word to a native triliteral root; it simply transliterated the sound.
