The word comes from the Arabic triliteral root ج-ن-ز (j-n-z), which carries the sense of covering, wrapping, or carrying away the dead. From it derives the bier on which a body is borne and, by extension, the whole funeral rite. The verb جَنَّزَ means to prepare a corpse for burial.
