Etymology
The verb comes from the Semitic triliteral root ḥ-w-l, which carries the idea of change, turning, and passing from one state to another. The same root gives Arabic words for a state or condition (ḥāl) and for the passing of a year (ḥawl). The Form II pattern adds gemination to make the action causative: to make something change.
