Etymology
سِكْرِتِير is a direct loan into Arabic from French secrétaire, itself from Latin secretarius, a confidential clerk or officer. Latin secretarius comes from secretum, meaning something set apart or hidden, from the verb secernere, to separate. Arabic borrowed the word wholesale rather than translating it, and it entered common use during the era of European administrative influence in the Middle East.
