Etymology
The word is the active participle of the verb طرأ (ṭaraʾa), meaning to happen suddenly or to come up unexpectedly. It derives from the Semitic triliteral root ط-ر-أ, tied to the idea of an event arriving from outside and without warning. In modern usage it attaches to anything sudden or urgent, from an emergency to an incidental circumstance.
