Etymology

طَرْح is the verbal noun of the native Arabic triliteral verb طَرَحَ (ṭaraḥa), meaning to throw, cast, or put down. From this concrete sense of throwing something down, the word extended to mean putting an idea, question, or product before others, and later to the mathematical act of subtracting one quantity from another. It is a Semitic root with no known connection to Indo-European vocabulary.
