Etymology
The word comes from the Arabic triliteral root ع-ض-ل (ʿ-ḍ-l), which carries a sense of firmness and of something knotted or hard to move. The same root gives مُعْضِلة, a knotty problem or dilemma. A muscle was named for its dense, firm flesh. The feminine ending ة marks the single unit.
