Etymology
The word comes from the Semitic root ʿ-sh-sh, a geminate root whose second and third consonants are identical, giving the doubled shadda in ʿushsh. The base sense is a built shelter for an animal, and Arabic keeps this narrow to nests of birds and similar creatures. From the same root Arabic derives the verb ʿashshasha, to build a nest.
