Etymology
The word comes from the Semitic root q-n-w/q-n-y, tied to the sense of a reed and then a hollow conduit. The same Semitic word for reed spread across the ancient Near East and reached Latin as canna, the source of English canal and channel. In Arabic the meaning widened from a water channel to a spear shaft and, in modern usage, a broadcast channel.
