Etymology

Kanz comes from the Arabic triliteral root ك-ن-ز, the same root behind the verb kanaza, meaning to store up or bury valuables. The root is native Semitic rather than borrowed. Since Arabic belongs to the Afro-Asiatic family rather than Indo-European, it has no PIE ancestor, but related roots for hiding or storing treasure show up elsewhere in the Semitic family.
