Etymology
The word entered Arabic from Persian kahrubā, the name for amber. The Persian term combines kāh, meaning straw, with rubā, meaning seizing, so it literally reads straw-snatcher. Amber earned this name because, when rubbed, it draws bits of straw through static charge. Arabic later adopted the word for electricity itself.
