Etymology
The word travelled out of Arabic and back. Medieval European alchemists borrowed Arabic al-kuḥl, the fine antimony powder used as eye makeup, and extended it first to any fine powder, then to a distilled essence, and finally to the spirit in wine. Modern Arabic then took the chemistry term back from Europe as كُحُول. The root ك-ح-ل still ties it to كُحْل, kohl.
