كُور comes from the Semitic root ك و ر, whose core sense is to wind, coil, or wrap. The same root gives the verb كوّر, to roll something up, and the Quranic term تكوير, the winding of night over day. The forge likely took this name from the coiled bellows-pipe that fed air into its fire, or from the rounded shape of the hearth itself.
