Etymology
The word comes from the Arabic root kh-b-l, tied to the idea of mental derangement and confusion. Classical Arabic used khabal for insanity or nervous affliction, and old poetry sometimes blamed it on a khābil, a jinn thought to unhinge the mind. Makhbūl is the passive participle of this root, so it literally means someone who has been afflicted with khabal.
