Etymology

The word is the active participle of the form V verb تَوَرَّطَ, meaning to become entangled or to sink into a predicament. It derives from the triliteral root و-ر-ط. The base noun وَرْطَة means a bog, a mire, or a difficult situation from which escape is hard, and the sense of moral or legal entanglement grew from that concrete image of being stuck in mud.
