Etymology
مُشَعْوِذ is the active participle of the quadriliteral verb شَعْوَذَ (shaʿwadha), 'to perform sleight of hand'. Classical dictionaries such as Lisan al-Arab define الشعوذة (al-shaʿwadha) as a quickness of hand that makes something look other than it is. Arabic lexicographers treat the root ش-ع-و-ذ as a native four-consonant coinage rather than a clear borrowing, so no foreign source is settled.
