Etymology
The word comes from the Arabic triliteral root ه-ر-أ (h-r-ʾ), linked to a verb meaning to talk wildly or to rave. The classical phrase هَرَأَ في مَنطِقِهِ meant to speak without sense. The noun هُراء names the speech itself: empty, foolish talk. The same root also carried the idea of overdoing a thing, as in cooking meat until it falls apart.
