Etymology
The word comes from the Arabic root w-q-f, meaning to stop or to stand still. A waqf is property whose ownership is frozen: it is taken out of circulation and dedicated to a charitable purpose forever. The sense moved from the plain act of stopping to the legal act of immobilizing an asset for God.
