Etymology

Modern Greek ένας descends from Ancient Greek εἷς, the masculine form of the numeral 'one'. In Byzantine Greek the old form was reshaped with the ending -ας, matching ordinary masculine nouns such as άντρας. The underlying root goes back to a Proto-Indo-European word meaning 'one, together', the same root behind Greek terms for unity and sameness.
