Αντίδραση is a modern compound built from the prefix αντί- (against, in return) and δράση (action), which comes from the verb δράω/δρω, meaning to act or do. Together the parts mean literally an acting back or a counter-action. The verb δράω itself has no securely established Indo-European root; some scholars treat it as a word of pre-Greek origin.
