Etymology
Απορία comes from ancient Greek ἀπορία, built from the negative prefix ἀ- (not, without) attached to πόρος (a way, passage, or means), plus the abstract noun suffix -ία. The root sense is having no way through, being stuck without the means to proceed. Ancient philosophers, especially in the Socratic dialogues, used the word for the puzzlement that follows when an argument reaches a dead end. English borrowed the term directly as 'aporia' for that same philosophical impasse.
