Etymology
The adjective comes from άτομο, the Greek word for both atom and individual person. Άτομο itself derives from ancient átomos, meaning indivisible, built from the negative prefix a- and the verb τέμνω, to cut. The suffix -ικός turns the noun into an adjective, giving the sense of pertaining to an individual unit, whether that unit is a person or a particle of matter.
