Modern Greek γαμάω continues Ancient Greek γαμέω, which simply meant "to marry, take a wife." That old, neutral sense survives today in γάμος, the ordinary word for a wedding. Over centuries the verb itself narrowed onto its coarse sexual meaning and became the roughest word in the modern vernacular.
