Etymology
Καθολικός comes from Ancient Greek καθόλου, meaning "on the whole" or "in general," itself built from κατά ("according to, throughout") plus the genitive of ὅλος ("whole"). Early Christian writers used the adjective to describe the church as universal, and that sense later narrowed in most European languages to name the Roman Catholic Church specifically. Modern Greek kept both threads: the religious label and the older, general sense of "universal" or "overall."
