Etymology
μιλιέμαι is the mediopassive of μιλώ, 'to speak.' That verb comes from medieval ομιλώ and ancient Greek ὁμιλέω, 'to be in company, to converse,' built on ὅμιλος, 'a crowd or gathering.' The base idea is people together, and the passive voice turns the focus onto speech that passes between them.
