Etymology

Πελάτης comes from ancient Greek πελάτης, which named a dependent who attached himself to a more powerful patron, a relationship close to the Roman patron-client bond. The word is built on πέλας, meaning "near" or "close by": the πελάτης was literally the one who stood near, seeking protection or work. Over time the sense narrowed from a social dependent to anyone who regularly does business with a shop, a professional, or a company, the modern meaning of customer or client.
