Etymology
Greek borrowed σοκ directly from the English word shock in the twentieth century, keeping the spelling close to the sound. English shock itself came into the language through French choc, a term for a violent collision or blow. The word entered Greek in both its physical sense, as in an electric shock, and its emotional sense, as in a psychological blow.
