Etymology

σταματιέμαι is the mediopassive form of σταματώ, to stop. σταματώ is traditionally linked to the Byzantine noun στάμα, a stopping, which in turn connects to ancient ἵστημι, to stand. That verb goes back to a Proto-Indo-European root meaning to stand or make stand.
