Etymology

The word comes from Latin absolvere, built from the prefix ab- (away, from) and solvere (to loosen, release). In Latin the verb meant to set free or acquit, and Church usage extended it to absolving sins. Romanian borrowed it as a learned word in the 19th century, when it took on the modern sense of completing a course of study and being released from student status.
