Etymology
Romanian took "calibru" from French "calibre" in the 19th century, part of a wave of French technical vocabulary absorbed during Romania's modernization. French got it from Italian "calibro", which most likely traces back through Arabic "qālib" (a mold or last), itself possibly borrowed from Greek. The word kept its core sense across all these languages: the internal diameter of a tube or barrel, and by extension a measure of size or quality.
