Etymology
Cheie comes from Latin clavis, key, through a Vulgar Latin feminine variant that Romanian reshaped into cheie. The same Latin root gave French clef, Italian chiave, and Spanish llave. Latin clavis is also tied to clavus, nail, which is why Romanian cui, nail, is a distant relative of cheie.
