Etymology

Cremă came into Romanian from French crème, part of the wave of French borrowings that reshaped Romanian vocabulary in the 19th century. French crème itself traces to Late Latin cramum or crama, a word of disputed origin, later influenced in form by Late Latin chrisma, meaning ointment, from Greek khrîsma. The same Late Latin source gave English cream through Old French. Romanian took the word ready-made rather than inheriting it directly from Latin.
