Etymology
The word comes from Latin "Getae", which in turn comes from Greek "Γέται" (Getai), the name Greek writers such as Herodotus gave to a Thracian people settled near the lower Danube. Romanian scholarship treats the Getae as close relatives or the same stock as the Dacians, so the compound "geto-dac" is common in Romanian historiography. The deeper origin of the Greek ethnonym itself is not established with certainty.
