Etymology
Iubire is built from the verb a iubi, "to love," plus the noun-forming suffix -re. The verb itself is a Slavic borrowing, not a Latin survival: Romanian replaced or supplemented its Latin word for love with a form related to Old Church Slavonic ljubiti. That Slavic root goes back to the Proto-Indo-European root for love and desire, the same root that gave English "love" and German "lieben."
