Etymology

Joi comes from Latin Jovis, the genitive form of Jupiter, used in the phrase Jovis dies, day of Jove. Romanian kept only the Jovis part and dropped dies, unlike French, which fused both words into jeudi. The link between Thursday and the god Jupiter runs through most Romance languages.
