Etymology

Romanian borrowed "local" from French "local", which comes from Latin "localis", built on "locus", meaning place. The word entered the language during the nineteenth century, when Romanian scholars replaced many Slavic and Greek terms with French and Latin ones to align the language with its Romance roots. The native word "loc" (place), inherited directly from Latin, shares the same root.
