Etymology
Romanian borrowed operație from French opération during the nineteenth-century modernization of its vocabulary, when many Latinate and French terms replaced or supplemented older Slavic and Turkish loans. The word ultimately goes back to Latin operatio, operationis, a noun built from the verb operari, meaning to work or to labor. That verb in turn derives from opus, meaning work or labor.
