Etymology

Porc comes directly from Latin porcus, meaning pig or young pig. Romanian kept the word largely unchanged from Vulgar Latin, unlike English, which borrowed a form of the same Latin root through French to get pork while keeping its native word pig for the live animal. The Latin term itself traces back to a common Indo-European word for pig.
