Etymology
Putere descends from the Vulgar Latin infinitive potere, a reshaping of the classical verb posse, meaning to be able. Romance languages commonly turned this infinitive into a noun for power, and Romanian kept both halves of the pair: the verb putea, to be able, and the noun putere, power. The word is thus, at its root, simply the ability to do something turned into a thing one holds.
