Etymology
Rob entered Romanian from Old Church Slavonic rabŭ, meaning slave or servant, part of the large layer of Slavic vocabulary absorbed into Romanian in the early Middle Ages. The Slavic word is generally traced to a Proto-Indo-European root meaning bereft or orphaned, the same idea of someone stripped of family and freedom. That root also produced Latin orbus and English orphan. A separate branch of the same Slavic family, Czech robota, meaning forced labor, later gave the modern English word robot.
