Etymology
Sân descends from the Latin sinus, which meant a curve, fold, or hollow, and by extension the fold of a garment at the chest or the breast itself. Romanian kept both the concrete anatomical sense and the figurative one, so a person can seek shelter in the bosom of a family or a church much as in Latin. The word is one of the core Latin survivals in Romanian, unlike some later borrowings.
