Etymology

Servitoare comes from servitor, the older Romanian word for a male servant, with the feminine agentive suffix -oare added to mark a female doer. Servitor itself traces to Latin servitor, one who serves, built on the verb servire, to serve, from servus, slave. Romanian kept this Latin word alive alongside its Slavic and other borrowings, and the -tor/-toare pattern became a productive way to form agent nouns in the language.
