Etymology
Stâng comes from Vulgar Latin stancus, meaning tired or worn out. The Romanian word shifted this sense of weariness onto the left side, likely because the left hand was long viewed as the weaker, less capable one. Italian stanco, meaning tired, still carries the original, unshifted sense of the same root. Romanian is unusual among Romance languages in building its ordinary word for left directly on this idea of tiredness rather than on words for crookedness or the sinister.
