Etymology

Romanian borrowed "tenis" directly from French "tennis" (also reinforced by English) in the late 19th or early 20th century, as the sport spread across Europe. The English word itself traces back to Anglo-Norman "tenez", the imperative of "tenir" (to hold), which a server called out to warn the opponent before striking the ball in the medieval game of real tennis. "Tenir" descends from Latin "tenere", to hold.
