Etymology
Romanian borrowed "virus" from French and Latin during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, as part of a wave of scientific and medical vocabulary that entered the language alongside modern schooling and medicine. Latin "virus" originally meant poison, venom, or slimy liquid, not a disease-causing microorganism. The modern biological sense of a submicroscopic infectious agent developed only in the late nineteenth century, and Romanian adopted that new meaning directly from Western European science.
