Etymology

آتِي is the active participle of the verb أتى, meaning to come. The root أ-ت-ي is common Semitic and appears in Aramaic and poetic Hebrew with the same sense. The hamza of the participle pattern fāʿil merges with the root's first letter to give the long vowel written as آ. Used as a noun, it names what comes next: the following item, the coming time, the future.
