Etymology

The verb comes from the Arabic triliteral root ث-ن-ي, whose base sense is to fold, bend, or double something back. The same root gives اِثْنَان (two) and مُثَنَّى (dual), both tied to the idea of doubling. In the causative Form IV pattern, أَثْنَى shifted to mean praising or commending someone, as if turning words of approval back onto them.
